I am redoing two small bathrooms. This request is for advice on the lighting. I have seen, somewhere, lighting done with a flourescent fixture above a panel in the ceiling (lowered ceiling just over the wash basin & counter area), but I don’t remember where. This would be instead of the typical fixture above or next to the mirror.
Can anybody suggest a source for more information? I guess the key question is how do people (users) like this arrangement?

If there are people around using makeup, they may want the natural light of incandscents (although some of the "daylight" or "kitchen/bath" flourescents are not bad).
Slightly off-thread: I really like both a light and exhaust fan in the ceiling of the shower. Get the humidity out before it leaves the shower and be able to see what's going on (my wife and I each shave (different body parts) in the shower). -David
*An electrician explained to me once the importance of lighting the PERSON not the mirror. Stands to reason. - yb
*I did a built in above a surface mirror - storage for towels and custom flourescent light fixture with a paracube louver. I believe it worked because most of the other surfaces were very reflective - white laminate or near white paint. And young bob makes an excellent point. Did another master bath with a pair of triple head swivel sockets on either side with small spot type lamps (I use 50R20's then but would consider the small 120v PAR's today). And in designing dressing rooms (in theatres) I usually use incandescents above the mirror - which makes it easier to crowd a few more chairs in for a few big shows - but insist on a near white laminate counter and a white shelf or cabinet bottom above the lamps for good diffusion and to avoid dark eye sockets.Personally, I love the new linear incandescents, similar to the old lumiline, I think now called lincandescents.
*I like to hardwire the bathroom fan with the lights, no way to turn on lights without exhausting some moisture. - yb
*yb;sorry. That's one of my absolute pet peeves...although I can't deny the wisdom. I've put bath fans on a timer, so it shuts off in an hour or so. Better than leaving the light on.I'll also remotely mount the blower so the bath doesn't reverberate (yeah, even with the low-sone versions). David;I've found you can get flourescents with excellent color rendition. I look a color temp and trial and error. These are pricey ($8-12 per 40/34W bulb) but worth it. They can be better that the "kitchen and bath" and "daylight" ones they sell at HDs. Surprisingly, many people find "daylight" bulbs to be too cool and not "natural"....go figure.A
*Overhead lighting is the least flattering. Put the lights on the wall next to the mirror.
