in a shower ...
do yourself ... or the cleaning person ....a favor.
go with bigger tiles and less grout lines.
Bigger has been the trend around here for the last coupla years ....
not really a look I think that'll become "dated" ...
as with the earth tones as U suggest ... with a nice complimenting grout ...
lend themselves to appear more like stone work, as opposed to small ceramic tiles.
especially if U are doing the floor as well.
contrary to common thinking .. bigger tiles make a smaller floor look larger.
for a typical small bath .... 5 x 8 .... something right around 12"x 12" is just about right.
I'm planning on doing my own bath/shower in 6x6 ... or 6x8 ... basic off white Daltile .... from where ever it's cheapest ..... in a running bond pattern ... like brick or stone work. I'll go with a light tan grout ... to tye it into the beige floor ....
one nice thing about earth tones ... as the grout darkend ... it still looks good.
No white on white for me.
If I wanted bigger ... also an option I'm considering ... I'll look at something around 9" or 10" square. Maybe on the diagonal to make things look even bigger. All depends what the "bargain basement" at my favorite tile shop gets in for cheap.
I got about $300 of list price tile up on that floor for $60.

I used 12 x 12 tiles for my shower area. I'll post some pics tomorrow (if I get a chance)
Backer board was 5' tall, so the tiles are 5 high. The backer board is 3' wide, but my tub itself is 33" wide, so I had to trim the backer a bit, and trim the inside row of tiles a bit.
All in all, it was much less labor, looks good, and has fewer grout lines to keep sealed/cleaned. James DuHamel

I'm using in my own house for the fourth time tumbled marble. I love it.
Soft look. When I'm in my bath/shower I wanna feel relaxed not glaring tiles reflecting my extra pounds....lol.
For the shower floor in my new master bath I'll be using tumbled marble mosaic squares for the floor pan.....and 4x4's for the walls with the exact same color grout.
I take some of the mosaics and cut out maybe 3 tiles wide to incorporate it into the wall 4x4's just to tie it all together and give it an accent.
I just absolutely love the stuff.
Shop around as this cheap HinJew does and you can get it at a pretty decent price.
In my favorite house I did many moons ago I used 12x12 Taiwan Green marble.....walls floor and ceiling...big shower stall with a nice sized bench seat I could make love on <G>....hey dude....dats important to me....not sumpin' you'd see on TOH...what babies.
The entire wall to the outside overlooking the woods I used glass block....the lower block you couldn't see into or out of and when it became head high I used clear block so I could see the woods and sky...
Be well bro
