Well that was sure a rookie DIY question.
For the floor you need something that is slip resistant and strong enough to walk on. For the walls ... almost anything goes. I have done the basic 4" ceramic tile and tumbled limestone tiles, and stuff in between.
Why do you ask?

baically because I do not know what type tile to buy. I do not know if or what is waterproof. I know nothing about design of bathroom tile. All I know is, I been putting this off for three years and I need to do something.Yes, I am a rookie, a newby, I know nothing about anything, I can offer no information to any subject here. quick call Bob, get my tavern membership taken away. Yes, I am a DIYer or like the other guy said, I am stealing money from professional tile setters. I am a thief.....
Oh, chill brownie. Maybe you're a rookie at tile, but we all know that you're very good at other stuff, like concrete. I was pulling yer laig.
For the walls, pick out what looks good and whjat you can afford. The glazed ceramic tile is waterproof, as is porcelain. The natural stoone tiles are porous. But the grout is porous too. grout sealer helps a lot, but that's why you build the shower with a water shedding membrane.
For the floor, just make sure whatever you select is rated for floor use. Some tiles are labeled for wall use only.
