Allow me to add to the ignorance, since admittedly tile isn’t my forte. I think what I’d be focusing on is why the tile cracked. Theres numerous possibilities, but the most common answer is that the floor isn’t sturdy enough to support it. If that’s the case, then adding tile over it isnt going to accomplish a great deal. Laymans terms, you might have more deflection in your floor than a tile can withstand.
I suspect your money is better spent to pull the old off, ensure the substrate is in good order, and you might consider a disconnect membrane like ditra under your tile.
