Hey,
I’m installing a new tub. I have 2 questions:
1. Does the drain system (which goes into the crawlspace) need to be all glued, or can I use threaded connections?
2. I need to bind ABS to PVC. I heard that Oakey Transition Glue works for this. Anyone have exp. with this? Do you still need to use primer with the PVC?
Thanks,
Ryan

1. You can use whatever fittings, or combo thereof, you need. So long as the joint is tight, it doesn't matter whether it's threaded or glued.
2. Check with your AHJ. In my neck 'o the woods, glued transitions are not allowed, period. The inspectors require Ferncos for transitions. Always use primer.

funny how a few miles can make all the diffrence in the world . we can only use ferncos outside the house ,any were inside it must be a misson brand fitting
Are they specifying brand or style?
Shielded couplings inside, non shielded outside is the UPC.
"we can only use ferncos outside the house ,any were inside it must be a misson brand fitting"Could you show be a copy of the code that says that..

i just know the inspecters prefer it that way, shielded inside
But there are unshielded Missionhttp://www.missionrubber.com/Products/FlexSealCouplings.phpAnd shielded Fernco.http://www.fernco.com/plumbing/shielded-couplings.

thanks for the info
Heck, if it just dumps into the crawlspace, you don't need any connections, do you?

Don't laugh at that one...my little brother who thought he would get rich with rental houses tried to fix a plugged drain from the bathtub. He went in the crawl and saw a plug in the iron pipe, removed it to run a snake, and all the backup drained into the crawl. HE LEFT IT!! And when his tenat complained of the smell, weeks later he ask me to help him find the problem.
One look, or wiff, in the crawl showed me the problem.
I sent his skinny butt in there!! And our father was a plumber!
i was always understading that code only alows all glue p trap . there is a glue that bonds pvc to abs , i never used primer on the applicaton , but read the can . the glue can be had at h.d.
UPC allows either, but no transition glue, but that is changing not too far in the future.
But threaded does not mean UNION. Those two piece plastic traps that are joined by a union must be accessible.
