I have a typical cast iron bathtub and the bottom is exposed to the crawlspace. Even in Southern California it gets cold at times, so I’m thinking about covering it loosely with a wire mesh and using expanding foam to cover it to a depth of 2 inches or so. Any downside to this idea?
Thanks for your input.

When I lived in anchorage, my bathtub was situated directly above an unheated carport. Had the bathtub not been well-insulated, it wouldn't have been useable! By the time we moved to So. Cal., my wife had become so accustomed to having an insulated tub that I insulated that one, too. The only downside I anticipated was the possibility of inadvertantly making threaded fittings inaccessible, so I formed around the tub drain with a cardboard "dam" large enough to accommodate wrenches before applying the foam insulation.
Let us know how yours turns out!

A great idea. I would suggest using rigid foam chunks as fill as much as possible to reduce costs.
