Source control, ventilation, and filtration are the keys to healthy indoor air quality. Dehumidification is important too.

We had a new house built for us 4 yrs. ago. Now have BainUltra - air tub upstairs. The air tub was supposed to be more hygenic than a whirlpool - but the air cools the hot water off too fast.
Anyway, its acrylic and solid. While my wife picked out the tub based on the deeper fill depth (she's 5'-10"), the overflow discharge negates the water fill depth; so ask the vendor about that aspect.
We have Kohler 48" acrylic shower stalls up and downstairs. That width is nice.

Trust me - I know!
Cam,
Look into Ameri-cast, I think American Standard makes it, look and feel of CI with-out the weight. If you use FG or Acrylic be sure to "bed" the tub in plaster (my preference) or Structolite (a perlited gypsum). Use Densshield as your tile backer on the walls.
Have you considered re-glazing the old tub,if you like CI, or is it too far gone? Check references, that means ask for a customer from 5-6 yrs. ago and then actually go look at the work and how it has stood up. There's a lot of fakers out there, but there's some good ones too! You gotta do your homework!! Might be less expensive than ripping out the old, depending on your tub layout and plumbing situation.

I googled americast and came up with a lot comsumer complaints of crack & chips.
And back warrenty from American Stanard.
For a deep but conventional tub we use the American Standard "Standard" bathing pool tub. Acrylic, 21" deep, 34" wide and standard 5' length. Popular among our "larger" clients or those that like to soak in a tub a bit. I am both and have had 2 of these in my homes so far. About $500 per.
For a cost effective 5' tub we use the American Standard Solar model. 17" deep, 32" wide, standard 5' long, steel body with baked on porceline. Nice finish and a good 15 year tub without a load of expense. $300 per ish.
Americast is ok in my opinion. We use the home center model that is only 14" deep for older clients that want a tub but use a shower and struggle to get their legs over the edge. They also have an Americast that is 17" deep. I concure they chip easier but other than that they seem ok.
I am not a fan of fiberglass tubs. They fade and need waxed yearly. Personally I am not a fan of waxing my bath tub. But they do hold up well. DanT
