I had an excerpt downloaded from the internet regarding baluster spacing.
It said for balcony baluster, they had to be 4″ apart or less.
For the stairs themselves, it said they could be 4 3/8″ apart.
Do you know what code is for baluster spacing on the stairs (4″ or 4 3/8″)?
It makes the difference of needing 3 iron balusters or only 2 on each step.
thanks,

in my area code states that a 4" sphere can't pass through any part of the ballustrade. there are different height requirements between the landing and the stair rail here.
Roger, I'm in NC, also. For meeting code, I have never seen anything other than a 4" or less spacing on any kind of vertical balusters... never trust anything you read on the interenet, ha!
Perhaps the 4 3/8 was referring to spacing on center of balusters which then accounting for the diameter of the balusters themselves would leave you with 4 inches between them. Though that would indicate really slim balusters.
Just take a toddler and see if you can jam his head between them and you should be good to go :).
