I am currently looking to replace an old (50 yr) picture window on a brick ranch with a bay window. I would like to have wood interior with a clad exterior and casement sides. Right now I am looking at anderson, pella and mavin. I will also be hiring the job out. Any suggestions, tips would be appreciated. Note, this will be in the Pittsburgh, PA area.

Contact Jeff Buck at this site. He's young, personable, energetic and if you can take his word......good at what he does. Added plus, he's a rabid steeler fan. Can't have everything.
*Thanks but I already contacted Jeff and right now he is tied up.
*So, any moree suggestions out there? What windows do you guys use and like?
*I don't want to be a smartass, but what do you want to know? All three window manufacturers you list are quality (Marvin is maybe what you mean?) and I would use any of them. Anderson will fab up a unit that will hang from above (blocking in the soffit/rafters). Maybe Pella/Marvin are the same, don't know. So, you can roof it, or go up to the bot. of the soffit. You can cantelever the joists and be able to walk out into the bay. Or you can run the window low enough to accomodate a seat. Make the return under the window appealing from the road. Lotta times that is where a good job gets ugly. Might check on the need for tempered glass if using a seat. Richard, there's even more to consider, what are you after? Maybe even post a pic of the window you wanna change. And be patient. Best of luck.
*Rich....if you are still going with the initial plans.....straight up, and nothing underneath....I still recommend the Andersen with the cable supports. You could then attach the cable ties to a small ledger...which would run across the brick...then frame up to tie into the soffit...and cover it all. Remember that I said to set the cables about an eight high out of level.....the rep I talked with said the cables do stretch a tine amount under load....and that should let it stretch and get to level. As to underneath.....I think you just wanted the 2x supports....I'd still say think about boxing it in under....even if it's just a "hip-roof up-side down" kinda thing. Maybe some nice cedar, or hardi plank. Even some T-111 usually looks better than the 2x or 4x arms. I'm to pick-up a load of steel studs this week for the top floor of the duplex.....and on Fri. the owner "remembered" that I do drywall too....so I'm bidding what I'm framing......what I had planned on the whole time....so,yeah...I'm still booked up thru the next few months. Jeff
*Speaking of tempered glass, I believe the standard may be any glass that reaches within 16" of the floor has to be tempered. Now somebody go untie Jeff.Pete
*and bring the cuff keys! Jeff
*Yo Pete,Isn't it 18" from the floor? And while I got you here,What about proximity to a ledge you could sit on, ie a window seat? Same thing?
*That's the spirit guys. Basically I was looking for some suggestions as to what was a good window. This is a job that I am going to let a professional do. I wouldn't mind taking on a regular window but the bay has me a little worried. Wanted to see if anyone had bad experiences with a certain brand of window. Oh, I was talking about marvin, my fingers weren't working right. Also, what to be asking the contractor installing it. So keep it coming. rich
