Your going to get a hundred different answers here. I've framed 16' spans just supporting ceilings before with 3-1/2" x 11-7/8" microlams with no problems. I've also framed many garages with 2-2x12 16' headers for the door before supporting ceiling beams and rafters and never had a sag.
This doesn't mean that you can do it where your from though.
Moment = sigma *Z
sigma varies from 800 to 2000 psi depending on wood used
Z = b*H^2?6
Moment = w*l^2/8 for uniformily loaded beam
w= pounds per inch loading
b, H, and l in inches
Convert to metric and just figure it from there.
the simple answer is call your building official.

as for your question, you'll get plenty of answers that will ( or perhaps not) suffice.
Since you need to pick up the lumber anyhow I would go to a lumber yard ( not HD or Rona) and get them to size it for you.
having it sized at the lumberyard or at the AHJ office is the right answer. Structural answers here are ionsufficient because the information given is always insufficient. Nobody picking on you. It just is not possible to provide that sort of info here.

I used to figure a 4 x 6 for 6', a 4 x 8 for 8' and 4 x 12 for 12' etc. That only works to a point.
That is a rule of thumb for sizing door and window headers with no extra live load above other than roof.In this case it would be wrong. We have no idea what the tributarty loading is - ie. how long are his floor joists?
