....Jim.... your LVL dealer can crank out the answer in nothing flat.. bring a 8.5" x 11" sketch along so they can fax it off to LVL land....
*Jay yes trusses are supported by existing truss header in a 24' deep garage.Not sure of live load rating here.jim
*Jim, I doubt a 9.5" LVL or Glulam will cut it in your area. Even with the 20# snow load here in Illinois, I wouldn't go that shallow on a 16' door.

At a 30# p.s.f. live load and a 15# p.s.f. dead load with a 12' tributary you will need a 3 1/2" x 14" Parallam or a 3 1/2" x 14" LVL. That is for a 16' header span. It will give you L/580 live and L/378 total load. By no means overkill if snow is a factor.

Sorry, it's not going to work. In southern Michigan we use a 52# total loading (35/7/10). If you have a 2' overhang your longest span would be just a bit over 13' with three plys. Nothing in my tables will work in glu-lams with those dimensions either. Can you take out the double top plates and cheat down the available opening height? Otherwise, talk to someone about a steel beam.
*Just my miserly observation, but we're getting into a lot of money here, aren't we?Could you just jack the whole garage up a foot? Dig down a little? :)

I know we always say check with an engineer, but , I'm just looking to see if you guys agree with me on my choice.
Raising 16' garage door header to 8' from 7'.Current header is engineered truss approx 15' tall 17' long 2 ply 2x4.
Roof trusses are 4/12 24' 0" long with 2 layers of asphalt shingles on top,and miscelaneous junk (xmas decorations and home improvement supplies) stored in the chords.
I'm thinking of using a 9 1/2" lvl or micro-lam on three trimmers at each end.This choice is made mostly because that's all that will fit.I guess I might be able to go with 3 lvl if I just change front wall to 2x6.
