Hi Folks !
I’m needing a bit of masonry advice. Before te new asphalt goes down in the driveway, I want to put in belgium block as curbing. I have limited masonry experience,I was thinking of pouring a footing (8x8x8 ? ) and then cementing the blocks to it, and going back to grout in later. My questions are, for the footing, use gravel mix? To cement down the block, portland and sand? what mix?
ITs a total of about 155 feet. I live in tri- state area.
Although hiring a mason would be great , its just not in the budget, so ….
“I’m not a mason, or a masons son, but i’ll be the mason till the mason comes”
Thanx for any help E

This is a British site, so curb is spelled kerb, but it is very well illustrated and clearly written.

DEunc: Hey - that was a neat link. I'm a self taught block cutter, and over the years have developed my own methods of cutting blocks/granite. This will make it easier. Although, I have been slowly edging toward his methods for cutting.
Thanks.

I am not a mason or have ever installed belgium block. I have seen it done. As I recall there was no footing, just a trench with coarse sand on the bottom. The blocks were laid standing up with a mortar joint in between. As I recall 1/3 of the block was above the level of the stone pavers and 2/3 in the trench.

My observation is, that having the border pavers/block ABOVE the driveway/walkway surface makes is very difficult for water to run-off and causes havoc if you use a snow plow. The blocks are getting broken off with the plow.
