Hello all,
I Have to cover a small length (22 feet) of painted facia with coiled aluminum. It is not enough to warrant renting an aluminum breaking machine. I have several bends to make in this facia and was wondering how to bend the aluminum in the field. Anybody have any ideas on a simple jig?

I really do not think that you will get a satisfactory bend without a break. I have done this. Go to the local whoever that has one for rent and see if they will let you use the break there. Maybe offer to pay them 10.00 bucks for the use and be done with it. Or if know someone who does vinyl and will let you bend the metal at there jobsite. Making a temporary jig will not produce the sharp bends you need.

Oh, oh I was afraid of that. I have seen it bent by hand ( literally) and that looks like hell, but I thought some sort of wooden contraption with clams might make a sharp enough bend.
It will look like heck!
Some of the suppliers keep a brake onsite and let their customers use it.
blueWarning! Be cautious when taking any advice from me. Although I have a lifetime of framing experience, some of it is viewed as boogerin and not consistent with views of those who prefer to overbuild everything...including their own egos
Additionally, don't take any political advice from me. I'm just a parrot for the Republican talking points. I get all my news from Rush Limbaugh and Fox and Friends (they are funny...try them out)!
try calling a local sheet metal shop, they would probably be willing to bend your stock for you for a small fee. Much less then renting for a day.
Metal roof guys bend metal for custom flashings and fascias all the time. Call a commercial roofing outfit and tell em what you want.

We have a break and usually it is set up in the shop, 20 bucks so we can buy lunch will usually get that much material bent up the next time we are in the shop. I am sure quite a few guys feel the same. DanT
Thanks for the advice. No shortcuts I guess. When all else fails, do it the right way.
Roughcut -- you in the DC area? You could use mine
try this take a piece of plywood about 12" square.
Draw your desired profile on the ply.
drill a small hole, just big enough to get your jigsaw blade into, in either end of you line
then saw the line.
rip your aluminuminum to the exact "length" of your cut out.
to loose and it will wander.
screw your "die" to a stud
put a little kink at the desired bend location to help get it started
and extrude your fascia just like the gutter guys do!
you will need a helper to feed the aluminiumunumnun while you pull it thru

I can't afford to be affordable anymore
I rented a break last Friday for two hours for $14.00.
Seems like a simple, cheap way to go.
