I have to base a small inside curve with 5/8 x 5″ mdf. I’m thinking of trying kerfing the back and then wetting it to get it in one piece. the curve is fairly tight, and the piece will only be about 5 feet long. is there a better way to do this without going to a flex type product???

you shouldn't need to wet it,
you shouldn't need to wet it, just kerf it about 1/2 inch apart to within an eighth of the face

At my old finish job, we used rubber base for curves. We had it in 2 1/4 Ogee and a more decorative 4 1/2 base. I'm not sure if they make just plain 5/8 by 5. I'm not sure where the boss got the stuff, all the materials just magically appeared in the garage.
Sorry. I just reread your original post. I missed the " without going to a flex product" part
