Hi all.
I sent a post one year ago about the best way to rebuild a roof decking to support a roof tiled with stones (heavy ones). I am using timber rafters.
I would like to restart the discussion. Have a look to the pictures: http://www.freewebtown.com/casapollo/pictures.htm
It is a protected building, and there is no way that they will give me planning permission unless I use the original stones. The builders in the area are using corrugated steel, then a layer of concrete, then the stones loose on the top, attached just by their weight. The steel sheet keeps the roof waterproof (or so they say) and the concrete gives a base for the stones.
Do you think that their solution is the best? Won’t the concrete crack as the temperature changes? Will the corrugated steel eventually rust?
If that’s possible, I would like to find a way to rebuild the roof without using concrete. Any ideas out there?
Thank you!

what was the original construction? most tile or slate installations had designs that allowed them to breathe or dry out.I have reroofed very old flat roof building that had leaked for years the insulation would drip water out as removed and the deck remained sound
Hi roofdoc.
First of all, I must to say that this isn't a building made for being inhabited for long periods of time. It is a cabin that the shepperds used during the summers while the cows were grazing on high ground. The cows were kept in the ground floor, while the shepperds slept on the first floor, where the straw was stored too.
The cabin was made with the materials found in the site, i.e. stones, timber and clay. So the structure was made of oak half logs put together forming the structure and the decking at the same time. Then a layer of clay or sod would cover the gaps, and then the stones (not really slates, most of them are over 1 inch thick) on top, in a overlapped fashion.
My idea is to create the structure, made of timber, then build a decking as waterproof and durable as possible and then the stones properly laid on top to protect the decking, and create the great look that they give to the building.
Any ideas without the use of cement?
Thanks very much.
Miguel.
