Can anyone clue me in to what is the best self tapping screw to use in brick?
I need to anchor a 6 inch vent hood to the exterior of my brick building and want the best attachment to the building besides the cheap screws that come with the broan I bought. Thanks!

big,
I often use a plastic anchor when anchoring to brick, especially soft old brick. The sleeve acts as a sort of cushion keeping it from powdering or chipping out.
The ones I prefer are Expandet anchors View Image
I see on a search that this is a danish company, but they used to be on the shelf in most yards and hardwares here in NW OH.

Never tried that - never even thought of it - I obviously don't put in enough hours. ;))Remodeling Contractor just on the other side of the Glass City

drill a 3/8" inch diam hole, make a small plug from a scrap of PT and pound it into the hole, use any screw you want.

I cut a sliver of copper about 1/8th wide and 2x the screw length, fold in half and insert in the hole, drive any screw into that..it wads up and grabs real good.
The blue "Tapcon" screws work well in concrete, but I have had poor results using them in softer brick.
The plastic screw anchors are just fine for the sort of load you will be supporting. For heavier loads, or extremely soft brick, I use anchors where a nut pulls on a stud - colllapsing a metal sleeve that is around the stud. The heaviest loads get bolts, screwed into wedge anchors.
The 'screw into a wood peg' trick was likely the first type of anchor. It has been so far surpassed by newer anchors that the electrical code forbids their use.
