We just moved in to a house with plaster walls. I need to hang pictures, towel racks, etc. What are the best screws/fasteners for plaster? This house was built in the late 50’s and has what appears to be plaster over dry wall(?). “Lath and plaster” has the wood strips, right? Sorry, but I don’t even know the correct terms for this type of construction.
Any advice would be appreciated. I’ve been afraid to touch the walls since I didn’t want to chip out a big hole. All previous houses I’ve lived in had dry wall. Any links on this subject? I tried searching at this web site but didn’t find anything relavent…
Thanks again

You are fortunate to have a house plastered over gypsum lath. This is the best residential interior wall finish system ever. To hang heavy objects like book shelves or the like you should find a stud and screw into the stud. For plaques, pictures, most mirrors, towel racks and things like those you can use a molly bolt made for 3/4" thickness or any of many different types of expanding plastic or nylon anchors. Use a masonry drill to drill the holes and you can drill many holes with one bit.
The best web site for plaster and plastering is
http://www.oldhouseforums.net/ohfbbs/index.html Navigate from the page that opens. I don't know if there is an answer to this question specifically but it is a good bet.
