The longer length of these 3-in. stair gauges makes it easier to ensure an accurate layout when working with waned lumber.

I make my own templates which like store bought are only as good as the set up and use. Here's the one important tip I can offer, open the doors before you drill and hold a block on the backside to drill into.
I've seen or heard about the need to reorder a door or drawer front because oops........
and, use a 3/16" brad point bit and pick up some snap off screws (mm or u.s. ) as you'll find drawer backers etc often screw with the lengths packaged with the hardware.
Quite a while ago at the counter in my local lumberyard, a very affluent somebody asked how much I'd charge to install the pulls and knobs on his new cabs he put in. My reply was a buck a knob, 2 bucks a pull.
Whoa he says.......the hardware only cost me that much.
How much did the doors and drawers on those cabs cost you?
He hired me, was very satisfied and passed my name along. Had to smile as I pulled out around his car that surely cost more than I clear in a year.
So, be carefull.
.
I have used some expenisive ones before 80-100 dollar, some cheap plastic versions too. I usually just make a wood set quick, I actually like them better. Watch the door stile width, often different doors vary, easy to miss. I'm just too picky on location of the hardware to use cheap templates. There are no set locations for hardware, I hold up the hardware on several doors to see what looks the best with the cabinet and hardware combo.
