Do you mean the tail piece?

yes
It looks to me like they just put the flex elbow onto the basket strainer threads and tightened it. I like the idea of the clean out adapter threaded on and then put the flex elbow on that.
I have done it with all pvc and used a regular tail piece and a tail piece adapter, I coupled the pvc with a Fernco and had no trouble. That worked well.

Yea, that's what I thought, but at the hardware store when I put the rubber elbow on, there just isn't a lot of thread to tighten too. Also on sink is lower than the other so I need to get a 'tail' connected but an 1 1/4 white tail has a 'way' smaller diameter than the inside diameter of the black elbow.
Is this bathroom or kitchen sink? Kitchen sinks have a 1 1/2" tail piece. Bathrooms have 1 1/4" tail piece. If you do a 1 1/2" tail piece and a pvc street tail piece adapter that should fit in the elbow.

it's a kitchen sink. maybe they do fit, but the ones at home D don't.
