installing 1/2 x 8 beveled cedar siding. finger joint, pre-primed. out west here.
should joints be butt or mitered. if mitered i end up with a bit of an angle on the face of the board. i figured mitered for obvious reasons. the joints are tight, just askew.
as well, existing has casements face nailed. do i really need any face nailing on lower portion of siding…or let it fly.

I believe you mean "casing" nails..not casements.
and if ya keep them higer than the previous course it will help to allow the siding to expand and contract..I'd do it.
Butting is fine, use a slip behind the joint, prime the cut ends before ya nail the pc. up.
I would only "miter" the ends if I felt I could get a "scarf" which is not just a 45 or so..a scarf ought to be about 6 times the thickness in length..IE a 1/2 board would require an inch and a half of lap..THAT is a joinable joint. Not easily cut with the siding tool arsenal, but easily done with a powerplane or even a block plane.

It's been awhile since I've installed any beveled siding but if I'm not mistaken when you cut your miter, flip the board upside down to make the cut. I believe this will make the cut line on the front square to the long edge(plumb). Maybe I'm wrong but I think this works.
Use a 30 degree bevel and paint or stain the end grain. If anything shrinks it won't be as noticeable as a butt joint that has seperated.
I've cut for litterally thousnds of feet of beveled cedar siding all 8". i always made my joints with 45 degree bevels and they always came out looking great. I cut everything on the face and always face nailed it.
all the painted stuff stayed together well, but the homeowners who wouldn't have thier siding treated with anything(the natural look) doesn't hold up well.at least not where i live.but i live on a barrier island and see alot of harsh weather.i dont how it is where you are.
tyke

looks like i have some face nailing to do.
thanks,
later.
Personally I'm not into miter joints (scarfing)on cedar siding.
I've done scores of houses and butted every joint with strips of felt paper behind each joint.
Never ever had it fail in over 27 years.
Continually looks fantastic.
The only scarf joint I use is in the winter when I stash in my scarf.....oops sorry
Be well
