I am making custom door panels for an opening that is finish jambed at 48″ wide.
I can’t recall what the actual doors (manufactured) measure..my question is, wwith hinging and clearance(s) between panels, if I have 4 panels at 11 7/8″ am I gonna be way too tight?
I’d prefer to not have to plane/rip a slew on site, and ideally, would have all the finish applied before I hang them.
If you have a BF opening handy in your house, could you please measure the total panel size..even a 5/0 or other size would work, I just need a rough guesstimate to parlay to what I am making.
TIA

I have a 36" opening. The width between the two panels is the width of the hinge plates, which are surface-mounted. It is about 1/16th. The distance between the doors and the jambs is about 1/4". This allows enough clearance for the doors to open without contact.
I considered concealing the edges so the 1/4" gap would not show, but after installing it, found that it looked fine.
I think with four panels, you will be just right, even if it is a little close. You might make them 11 - 13/16" if you want less stress.
Of course this depends on the thickness of the hinges and whether or not you recess them. I think recessing them is not as attractive when the door is open.
Another trick would be to bevel the sides that go up against the jambs. That way you could take off just a little at the jobsite if you had to with minimal impact. That part will not really show anyway, with doors open or closed.
Finally, it would not hurt to make a mockup at the shop and try a set of doors out before finishing them.
Mock up...DOH!

Let me preface this with, Thanks, but I don't need a puppy.
Here the 4-0 opening has panels that are 11 7/8" - original 1967
hinges mortised
The 5-0 opening has panels that are 14 3/4" - replacements 2001
hinges not mortised
Both have 1/4 round as stops on left, top and right.
Whew. I guessed right then huh?
Thanks..puppy on the way..LOLSpheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks

I would bet that the answer is somewhat dependent on what brand of hardware you are using.

Choose your hardware, click on "click here for details" and then click on "Installation Instruction" under "Technical Info"
I looked at the 1800-1825, and the 1838. Both of them wanted 11/16" of extra room on a four panel opening.
The 1700 calls for 13/16" extra room on a four panel opening.

Thanks Rich, I don't have a good plan for the hardware yet..was gonna check out Lowes when I get out to town.
This is one of them, "I really don't want to do it and the wood is less than stellar, and the woaman is PITA and I really am busy as it is, and aweman..its an hour and half away" kinda deal.
The husband is a champ and has a sawmill and access to loads of cool wood..so I bend.
Once I getthe hinges, I guess I can wing it. The opening is pretty sweet, just a 1/4" out ( wide) at the top.Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
