A Carpenter laying blocks!!!
Man! We have to do it all!
I swear my Boss would have me wipe his azz if he could!
NOT!
If you are worried about production then hire a Mason.
If you want to save some $ do it yourself.
if you just want to know how long it will take, Ask the carp.
But wait isn't estimating Your job?
I have a feeling that no matter how hard this guy works, it won't be hard enough.
Am I venting again??
Sorry!

probably not enough to make it worth your time, particularly wheelbarrow mixing. if you're talking a foundation stem wall or something similar, hire someone. if something shorter in length you can do it, but it's gonna be a pain. wheelbarrows only mix 1/2 batch at a time, and you'll be amazed how fast you go through it with block.
How old is this carpenter?
He's gonna feel older tomorrow.
Not many, but eventually it will get done.

How old is this carpenter?
61..........me. Although I know how . . . have always subbed out the ground/foundation work before.
I have decided to build my own house by myself this time........sorta the last hoorah.....know what I mean. I figured about eighty a day would be good enough.........it's the mixing that will slow me down, maybe I'll buy a small mixer.
Hire a kid from the neighborhood to mix for you. My nine month pregnant wife mixed for me when we were putting in our foundation. As long as she didn't have to move blocks around the site she was great. It beat the heck out of climbing out of the hole to mix up a new batch of mud. I spent most of the time laying up the corners, so I didn't lay more than 80 in a day and I was 30 year old carpenter. When the corners were done I had a bunch of friends over to fill in the walls. Since I had short pony walls framed all the way around, I was able to correct any imperfections in the top course.

I envy you! That's one thing that's still on my to do list....
Are you still in the Canal Fulton area? I have a 1-1/2 batch mixer, scaffold and all the necesarry know how to help. Keith
Are you still in the Canal Fulton area?
Yeah......I live on Comet Lake to be exact, but will be building in the hills south of Newcomerstown (no codes or inspections) Looking forward to it. Are you looking to sell your mixer?
Ah, for the good old days when masons were masons. My brother and I , one tender,10'" slag blocks, 18'8" high walls with pilasters(3 scaffolds high), 6,500 blocks in 10 days. No forklifts or lift trucks, all by hand. Not a brag, just a natural fact.Be not afraid of going slowly. Be afraid only of standing still. chinese proverb
That comes out to 325/man-day. For masons, 300/day is not uncommon, but if you did all that and the staging and the hod mixing all alone with out a helper, my hat is off to you.
BTW, were the walls plumb?
;) Just kidding.

Plumb? you bet your sweet bippy it was plumb. We didn't use a line for level though. We were working close to the shore of a lake. All we had to do was sight across the top of the block and line 'em up with the water in the lake.
just kidding (har! har!)

Don't laugh!!
Thats as good a technique as any.
Blocks dont need to be that close.
thats what the mortar is for.
just keep 'em close enough so you can get the last course straight and level.Mr T

Can't sell the mixer, but if you were staying in Stark Co. I could come and bring some of the crew and help you out. I always figure we can get 7-800 per day of 8", with 3 laying and 1 tending.
Drilled a bunch of oil and gas wells around Newcomerstown, Baltic, Pearl, Stone Creek, Bakersville.....some pretty rough guys down there...Sheriff came one night and took the whole crew right off the rig...seems there was some trouble the night before in the LaToraine . Go figure. Keith
We did a Pole barn at Comet and High Mill a year ago. Is Comet Lake somewhere on Comet Rd?
Thanks for the offer Keith
I'm just south of newcomerstown, back in them thar hills..........don't expect any problems from the local scruffies (unless I stumble onto someone's pot patch). Actually some really nice homes being around there these days.
Comet and High Mill ......go east about 1/2 mile and you'll see the spillway. The 135 or so acres in that area is ours (mine and 38 other families make up the Comet Lake Assoc.) 35 acre finger lake full of fish. Pristine and private......and for sale. :-)
listed on realtor.com if anyone is interested.
me - fifty to a hundred and ten, depending...
