Boiler System “Clanking” Noises
I came here in late 2006. I had a noisy home boiler system. It sounds like “expansion” type noises when operating. I suspected the expansion tank, came here, got some assurance, and replaced that tank.
This greatly diminished the noise, though didn’t eliminate it. The remaining noise was much less frequent and quieter. I decided to leave well enough alone as long as it was working.
The noises have returned. It is loud again. Happens as it heats the water. Too loud to ignore.
I checked the expansion tank, it is lightweight. So I conclude that the tank is not waterlogged.
The tank pressure is 14 psi. This matches my boiler system pressure.
I don’t see any signs of a serious problem, such as water leaks from the inside of the boiler.
I AM TOTALLY LOST.
Thanks,
Ed

I suspect this is lime in the system.
That sounds beyond my capabilities.
Sounds like it might even mean a new boiler. The current one is only a dozen years old, so I hope I don't get dragged into that.
It may mean that you'll have to hire a pro to come and flush it out.
