I have 3.25″ oak tradional door and window casings in my home. This looks fine everywhere but on the front entry where it just isn’t dramatic enough. I’d like to make up a door casing (interior) but I just seem to lack the “vision” to pick out the right moldings. Style-wise I have a more/less craftsman-styled home so I can’t use a really ornate casing, but I want something more interesting than a board surrounded by a brick mold. The big box stores don’t have much selection of moldings and also don’t have any more ability to envision a bold door casing than I do 😉
Can anyone provide suggestions to this fussy homeowner? LOL

Here's whats in my head, from your description:
5/4 Plinth blocks, 6" wide at the base, something like this:

5-1/2" Coved (or not) casings and maybe a crown or dentil feature on the cap, notice the beaded strip where the side casing meets the top.

All in quartersawn white oak to match your house. Still craftsman, but bolder. Just widening the casings might be enough if what I suggested was too ornate. Most any planing mill can get/make these for you.
I pulled all the pics off google images - try a few search words & see if anything pops out.
Brian's idea is great. we did a whole home like that and it was nice.
Check out moldings online

are a couple of sites,
These are in primed pine, all pics from the Windsor One website, their "craftsman" collection.

There are dimensioned sections there.
Brian I like the picture. It's simple but wide and classy. Instead of a bunch of moldings I should just let the quartersawn speak...LOL
The detail drawing from Gene looks to be the same treatment.
Thanks all.
Here's something I consider pretty bold. A couple pictures during the walkthrough before buying our place. At first I thought it was bold, but now I think its a little over the top. It looks more like it belongs outside keeping the rain off the windows!

That would look pretty good if the "ears" were an inch or so shorter.
Yeah, what Dave said. That would look just fine if they had just returned the crown 1/4 inch or so past the moulding below instead of 2 or 3 inches like they did." If I were a carpenter"
