My house is a 2 story center entrance garrison colonial. I would like to install a central vacuum system and am trying to plan the piping layout. I’ve read articles on possible places to run the pipes. But, I don’t have first floor closets, the center line walls of the first and second floor don’t align. The only other inner walls are around the stairs. (First to second floor stairs are enclosed on both the first and second floors). The stairs from the basement to the first floor line up with the stairs from the first floor to the second floor. Both stairs run parallel to the floor joists. My plan is to run the pipes against the walls of the basement stairs and run them up to the first floor. I can continue the run inside the first floor up to the second floor but I’m wondering what the joist framing will be like. I’m assuming that there will be a joist (maybe double joists) under the second floor wall sole plate. If this is the case I can turn before I hit the joist(s) and come up through the finished floor and mount the vac outlet in the floor instead of the wall. Instead of making a lot of assumptions I would like to read up on floor framing. Can anybody recommend a reference book? Thank You.

When we framed in the late 70’s we would make up the two joists under a parallel wall with 2x4 blocking perpendicular to, on edge, and between the two joists. This allowed wiring, air return panning and duct work to be able to run up within the walls up through the 1st and 2nd floors.
If any walls line up between your floors, don’t get interfered with by plumbing, electrical or hvac, that might work for your run (if framed in a like manner.....)
