I’m courious as to how yourself and the other stair “GURUS” bore the rails.
lately I’ve started boring the rails after they are fitted but before they are permanently mounted. After I establish the layout on the landing tread/treads I set the rail on the L/T or lay it on the rake and transfer the layout. For straight/radious balcony it’s simply a matter of flipping the rail over and using my feet to secure the rail, drill away. As for the rakes,I not only flip the rail over but also exchange it end for end and then lay it on the rake, clamped to the newell and drill down plumb. I’ve done a modification to my drill as you have but not a laser, rather a target bubble set 90deg to the drill. I came about this way due to the pains of a wreckless youth and the punishment that comes with construction/carpentry. I find it easier on the knees, back, rotator cuffs etc…. The reason for my querry is that others {trim carps, stair guys etc..} say they have never seen it done that way, not that it’s wrong though. I can’t justify a “Bore Buster” but I wouldn’t pass on one for the right price either. One of the benefits of the way I do is that you don’t get all that dust/chips all over your sweaty self and start itching! I’d like to hear your’s and others views on this. RISE AND RUN!——-GEO——

I have done it the way you describe,, on straight inclined rails. Also, I prefer to drill level rails as well on their backs on the floor. With curved railing, I always drill in place.
