Question to Wormies: Is it normal for Worm-drive saws to generate considerable heat in the gear-box? After two decades of using a sidewinder, I burchased a Bosch 1677M. Beautiful thing. Beautiful kinda like a bulldog is cute.
I am breaking the worm in gently, but I have noticed after 10 x 8′ rips in 1/2″ ply that the gearbox is much hotter than I expected. Not too hot to touch, but much hotter then the motor enclosure. I would guess a temp of perhaps 120-125F. Ambient temerature is low, say 80 F.
I can see that the motor airflow would transfer heat forward, and I expect new – tighter gears to run hotter until break-in, but is this normal in anyone’s experience?
Thanks,
Edward
