Folks,
I’m re-shingling a house with a concrete block chiney that was added after the house was built. It looks like heck so I’d like to box it in and shingle around it. I haven’t talked to the building inspector yet but thought I’d ask you all for any advice you can provide. The chimney isn’t being used for anything right now. The previous owners had a wood stove in the basement that we don;t plan on replacing. Thanks in advance!

Go to a local supplier and ask for white or gray "Quik-wall". It is the product used for drystack block construction. Mix it, slap it on a mortar hawk and trowel it on. Paint if you wish. Use aluminum j-brake bent expansion joints between house siding and parged cinder block chimney.
Or......Take it down.

The inspector should accept pretty much anything you want to do. The block is a support for the chimney pipe inside and anything you add outside that is just cosmetic. You can box it and side to match the house, do stucco or veneer brick. Use the pre-fab fake brick panels and just screw it to the block and caulk. All sorts of options. I personally don't like the look of siding on a chimney and would choose one of the other options, but even siding looks better than just raw block. The fake brick would be probably the simplest. No scaffolding necessary like you'd need with real brick or stucco.
I think with the look of your house, a cultured stone veneer would look good. Look at his web page for some pics: http://www.culturedstone.com/
A nice cultured stone would look killer. Flash the two inside corners well.

Thanks for all of the ideas! I hadn't thought about something like a cultured stone veneer. That's a great idea! I'll look into that some more.
If I do end up boxing it in can I go all the way to the top or do I have to back off and have brick or the equivalent near the top? There's one house in the neighborhood that has the chimney boxed in only up to the roofline (I don't really like that look at all).
Thanks again for the feedback!"Regime change starts at home"
