Hello, I am looking for some guidance in purchasing a nail gun; I will be using it for a Varity of uses, from trim work, some furniture work and perhaps using to build a fence. I currently own a brad nailer (I believe it holds small brads, not sure of the size). Do I need a framing nailer or will a brad / finishing nailer work for my requirements?
Thanks in advance!

It seems that you are an amateur DIYer like myself. Over the years as I've done a lot of the things you describe I've found a need for all three types of nailers. No one tool can do all you want to do. It sounds like you have a brad nailer which usually means a light weight nailer shooting 18 ga brads from about 1/2" to 1", which are fine for small furniture trim,. picture frames and some small delicate indoor trim but is not suitable for heavier work. A framer is will not do furniture work well because it shoots bigger nails with either round, clipped or T-head nail that won't do for furniture. On the other hand finish nailers usually shoot finish nails of a maximum length of about 2 1/4"; OK for some furniture work and a lot of indoor trim but not big or robust enough to build a fence or hold outside trim.
How much it will cost you depends on how much risk you are willing to take. Good brands are the best way to go and a good finisher and framer can cost several hundred dollars total. I you are willing to take some risk you can buy used ones for a lot less. I found my nailers on eBay over a period of several months. The finisher was a refurbished unit that cost about 2/3 of the price of new. The framer was used but not worn out and has worked well for me. The fellow who was selling it had bought a Paslode Impulse and was selling his older air powered nailer. Hope this is some help or at least hasn't added to your question.

I used to work in carpentry but I dont anymore. If I had to choose between framer and finish nail gun for around the house stuff, furniture, etc.. I would definatly get a finish gun(15ga). When putting up trim or doing anything you would use a finish nail for, They save you from needing 3 hands. Every time I use mine I have trouble wiping that dumb smile off of my face. If you are in the market for one and buying new. (Make sure to get a 15ga gun, not the smaller 16ga) Expect to pay in the neighborhood of $200.00 I just bought a new one from hitachi and love it. Senco makes a great one as well. Hope that helps!
