Looking for advice and recommendations on what brand of finish nailer to buy. I was wondering if the Porter Cable compressor combo packages are a good deal. I’m new to carpentry but planning to stay in the field and trying to build up my tools. I have friends who swear by the senco finish nailer. What is the difference between angled and not?
Thanks,
Jon

A lot of people swear by the Senco and Hitatchi stuff, but I've had a Dewalt 16 ga. straight finish nailer I've used for several years and it's performed very well. The only time it sucks it when nailing in the corners on baseboard--that's when the angled magazine would come in handy.
I've owned a lot of PC air tools and they have worked well too--the guns are not as refined as others, but unless you're doing FT production trim, you should be fine with them.

Ditto Jason. The PC tools are good enough. And if you get a nailer-compressor package, it's a good deal, especially for starting out.
Usually the 16 ga are straight magazines and the 15 ga are angled. It does make a difference, cuz the angled will get into a tight corner much easier.

Got the Porter Cable 16g nailer as it was sold cheap. Works great, never a problem. If you're going to be doing a lot of nailing, daily, I'd go with the Paslode. Better tool, more durable and more repair shops when it's down. But for occasional work, PC will do the job.

My FT trim carp uses a Paslode 16 and 18 gauge finish gun. When we recently did a job together (me with my DW 16ga), she commented that although she didn't care for the bump-fire, mine was significantly lighter and more compact than hers. I imagine the Paslode would be more durable, however.Jason Pharez Construction
