I’m ready for a roof finish. Wanted to use Tamko lamerite but after I heard the price I don’t think I can do it. Anyway there are two small areas in the front that are screaming for copper (a small nook and a 2 foot bumpout over the garage) and I’d also like to use copper for the flashing as well as the drip edge because I’m using a 50 year roof on way or another.
To my surprise the roofer I talked to today suggested using brass vice
copper. I’ve never heard of this but it sounds interesting. Are any of you using it?
Ia there a downside?

Bout' 10 years ago I was driving to work in Rochester, NY (from Buffalo) and had to detour through an older neighborhood cause of some road construction. Saw a guy roofing an old, two story, steep roofed Victorian. I swear it looked like he was installing a nice, shiny, new BRASS standing seam roof !! I have tried to find that house a couple of times, no success. I would like to hear from anyone out there if this can be, has been done. What would the downside be? Cost, stiffness or brittleness of the brass, something I haven' thought of ?
getting a little chatty...
The two drawbacks you mentioned would be the same ones I would think of.
Maybe it should be used on that house in the thread on the spec house costing 155 million!

Walter, wheres that thread. I've seen a house in Austin TX that's supposed to run around 100 mil but you've peaked my curiosity.

Well it's time to eat humble pie. I finally reached the roofer that offered an alternative to copper and he said "NO, NO- not brass - bronze. I meant bronze colored aluminum." He has it in mind that I'm buying the copper for its looks ("bronze alumimum looks almost like bronwned copper" he said), but I'm mainly wanting vallys and trim that will last as long as the 50 year shingles, even if I won't be around long enough to see it.
Of course I do love the looks of copper, especially after it starts going blue.
Silly me.
Now I have one of those impossible choices; I can't afford copper and don't want any 'stinkin' alumimum. Oh help and bother!Edited 1/30/2007 7:14 pm ET by thetiggerEdited 1/30/2007 7:15 pm ET by thetiggerEdited 1/30/2007 7:16 pm ET by thetigger

The copper prices have come down a bit so don't just assume you can't swing it.
The amount of valleys can't be so huge that copper will break the bank. You know you won't be happy with painted aluminum-so spring for what you want!
Walter
thetigger,
Well I have brass angels holding up my copper gutters, I also have brass ivy climbing up the drain pipe. Plus brass deflectors in the corner to ensure the rain goes in the gutters rather than shoots past. They sell brass birds and wreathes for the gutters but I felt that was a little much.
Brass right now is cheaper than copper so what the heck, go for it!
(psit will turn brown and eventually a soft green so it will look just like copper from the road..)
It can be cheaper all it wants, but it is still more brittle than CU, so it would take 2-3 times the poundage to make a decent roof, unless this product mentioned is some new alloy. Brass decorative trivets have a different function from roofing material, so it can get by with different properties.

I did a search (which was by no means thorough) but I didn't turn up any roofing sources for sheet brass.http://logancustomcopper.com

And what I did find was that thickness for thickness, brass was more expensive than copper.http://logancustomcopper.com

Piffan,
I have a couple hundred pounds of brass I purchased from a scrap metal dealer decades ago. Big flat sheets about 30 inches wide 10 feet long and very darn thick, I'd say 6 to 8 times the typical roof flashing.. I bought it because it was so cheap! (I'm a sucker for a deal too good to pass up).. In retrospect it was an extremely great deal because 6 years ago I bought some nice thick copper sheets from the same scrap metals dealer 4x8 foot and about 3 to 4 times as thick as typical copper flashing.. I recently sold all my scrap copper to another scrap metal dealerfor more than what I'd paid for all the brass and copper originally. I still have the brass, I have a house covered with nice thick flashing and I probably made money on the deal besides..
"and very darn thick, "Like I said....

I called the company today to try to find out more but of course nobody was there but the secretary. I'll try to get more info on Monday. This is a very reputable company, BTW.
We'll all be on the edge of our seats waiting with baited breathe until then!my breathe is baited with garlic and cauliflour tonight, how 'bout the rest of you?

Just what do you expect to catch with that sort of bait?
My breath is bated, plus the usual additions of eau de cider and garlic.
Finally found a good, dry, hard cider- blackthorn.

Thetigger, what was the quote for Lamerites?
Think about $180 square locally.
Joe H
Joe H,
Back in september one of my suppliers referred me to a prospective customer.
Lamarites were in the discussion.
From my notes to calculate a proposal--------- the field materials were going to be approx. $400/square---------additionally the starter and hip and ridge were proportionally even MORE expensive.
for comparison---not long after that I bought NEW slate for another customer at almost exactly the same price.( to be fair---with the slate-I was buying a little less than 4 square and clearing out the supplier of what he had of that slate---he remarked that if he had ordered in larger amounts my cost would have just about doubled/square)
so--at least locally--I don't see the Lamarite as a particularly good value-------and ( I could be wrong here) --but I think the warranty was any better than a 50 year dimensional shingle
so probably----measured in cost effectiveness----the best value is either in the 50 year dimensional OR the real slate.-the lamarite seams to combine the worst of both worlds with little to recommend it.
Stephen
Stephen, I was told $180 by a supplier to a local job. I had mentioned the house and the woman at the supply house said she had sold them the roofing materials.
It was the first time I had seem them and thought it was a nice looking roof. She said $180 a square, but didn't mention the starter and ridge costs. 6 months ago approx.
Real slate doesn't exist here, as for 50 years I won't exist then either. Probably.
Joe H
Stephen - I'm guessing you live in New England - to get REAL slate in
Fl would cost me the slate price plus shipping from New England. Actually I wasn't going for a slate look - I wanted the weathered cedar.
I had real Canadian blue label shakes on my last house but to keep them from rotting in the hot moist Fl climate I had to go out and spray them with deck cleaner every spring.
thetigger,
I've heard that cleaning a cedar roof shortens it's life instead of increasing it..
Makes sense because the"dirt" acts as a barrier to UV dmage and other hazards.
By cleaning it yearly you are exposing another layer to UV damage..
I don't know if this will get me any points in heaven or not, but for once, I agree with you, Frenchy!mark it down...;)

I hear what you're saying but the problem was that fuzzy green grey stuff seemed to want to take root on the bottom edges. Anyway the new roof is going to be maintainance proof becuase I'm geting too old to climb around on roofs.
Well Piffan,
I'm not going to heaven, Who would want to stand around with a bunch of holier than thou people singing hymns all day?
They say that jazz is the devils workshop so I guess that's where I'll have to go. That and there seem to be enough fiddle players who've sold their soul to the devil for a good blue grass band. Besides aren't gin joints and juke joints supposed to be the devils playground? Sounding better and better all of the time..
So if you agreed with me simply to gain points with heaven I'm afraid once again us liberals fooled you <G>
frenchy,
Piffen is going to be seriously unhappy--when he arives at the pearly gates-----and learns that Jesus is a liberal.
LOL., Stephen
Hazlett,
darn it!
If Jesus is a liberal and look at all he did, I mean feeding the hungary, forgiving sinners, tossing the money lenders out of the temple...
Then the devil is a conservative...
tigger, I am in Akron, Ohio.
there are a couple of suppliers about 35 minutes away selling new and salvaged slate( they primarily serve the cleveland area marketplace which has many exceptionally beautifull older slate roofed homes)
stephen
The same roofer told me that Eagles had quoted it to him at $380, so after I read your message I called Eagle myself and got a quote of $281
- Wow that's a spread- 150 - 281 - 380 - think I'll do more checking.I'm going to Orlando next week I wonder if they would quote it at the show?
thetigger,
I was just quote, in CO from Eagles, $325 per square for just the shingles, not the ridge or the starter.
Woodnuck
Yea, I finally gave up. I'm still using 1" copper as drip and on the bay window roof, but the rest is fancy asphalt. (Sigh~) At least I can afford it.
Called a different Eagle in CO and got a quote of $282 per square. I then called back the roofing supply store here in WY and they came from $340 to $300 now. I wonder how many people do barter with suppliers?
