I’m going to install a free standing patio overhead supported by six brick columns. The square columns will be 2 1/2 bricks wide, leaving approx. 12″ of void in the center. What is typically installed in the void for structural support? I ‘m thinking of placing 3/4″ re-bar in each corner and filling with concrete. Is this overkill?

I typicaly use 2"or 3" steel pipe with a plate on each end bolted at the bottom and also to the beam then let the masons wrap it so the brick isn't structural at all . Chuck
*I use the same method as Chuck. Make the pipe colum support the structure and use the brick for a great finish.
