I want to pave an existing compacted earth breezeway under roof using 2.25x4x8 brick pavers. One source says that the base should be about 1.5″ of sand over 4″ of gravel. Do I need to use that deep a base when the area will be protected from rain and snow except for blow-in along two sides? The two opposing open sides are 10′ and 13′ with 18′ between them.

You probably could use the directions for the patio, but the rest is interesting reading too.
*Howard, I just laid (lay, whatever) a driveway and I used 10" of compacted limerock screenings and then about 1-2" of sand. The underbase might be overkill but I know it won't ever settle or ripple. I will suggest you watch the sand thickness as I found the thicker you go, the more difficult it is to maintain a nice flat plane on the surface.Good luck!Mike
*If it is for people only, not vehicles, you can probably get away with compacting by hand with a 4x4 or a hand compactor from HD; you will find the amount of gravel/sand recommended varies from place to place, minimum I'd say 3" gravel + 1" sand. If you don't have to remove the compacted earth to get to the right level, that will help greatly, as you will already have a stable base to build on. The gravel/sand will be more for drainage than stability in that case.
*Howard - Around here we use compacted quarry screenings over crushed stone, not sand. It won't settle or wash away.Jeff
*JeffIs "quarry screenings" the same as "stone dust"?
