I am giving the front of my house a face-lift and have a question regarding brick veneering and the footing required. I am in a typical California home with a concrete slab foundation. The veneer will be low (approx 2′) and there will also be a bump out in the footing for a new box bay window. The question… does the new footing for the above mentioned veneer and window need to be attached physically to the existing slab and if so how, or can I just pour right up to it.
Thanks,
Ken-

Ken: I would get a hammer drill and use a 5/8 bit and drill about 3 to 4 inches into the existing slab or foundation. Space these about 8 to 10 inches on the horizontal about 6" below the top of the slab and about 6" above the bottom of the footing. I'm assuming that you have a so called Rat Wall. This is what I mean by a foundation. Place #4 or 1/2" rebar into the drilled holes (hammer) and this will help hold the new concrete to the old. Good luck.
