Briggs&Stratton Carburetor–help?
Whenever I lift the hood on an engine I am already in over my head. But I keep trying to learn. My yard tractor was leaking gas and by the time I had taken enough parts off I found that the carburetor was spouting gas from a little nipple on the body of the carburetor, just beside the fuel line from the fuel pump. This is a two-cylinder 16 HP Briggs& Stratton.
Now–what has gone wrong, can I fix it myself, is the best bet to buy a new carburetor?
Help me learn something here.

I am sure someone will jump in and help you. If not, try these two sites:

They both have answered a lot of small engine questions. They are visited by nice folks. Not as nice as the guys and gals here, but nice never the less. ;-)
A cold Leinenkugels or two helps.
float stuck open
OK -
this suggests that the needle valve that controls the fuel level in the carburetor is stuck, jammed with debris, or deteriorated - (is there a fuel filter in the system?)
tap on the carb near the inlet with the butt of a screwdriver and see if you can loosen the valve -
purchase carb kit from dealer or NAPA or eBay (take all the numbers off the engine) remove carb, disassemble, clean, install new parts/gasket from the kit, re-install - work carefully on a clean surface - they are not that complicated - don't force anything -
you might try getting at the inlet valve without going thru the whole process - can you post a pict of the carb?
take the bowl off the carb. its probably on bottom the float will be in it. remove the brass pin fromthe float. when it comes off it will let a needle valve fall free and any trash that was holding it open.
If float is bad, it will sink letting needle open continously. hope this helps
