Hey everyone,
Last week I was borroving my friends cordless circ. saw. It was one of those 18v Ryobi jobs. The thing was a POS and I beat the crap out of it. I was demoing a wall and I may have hit some nails…and maybe some wire lath…and some ceramic tile that was under an underlayment. I think I did him a favor personally because if I broke it I’ll get him a new one and reccomend something different. None-the -less, I feel like an A-hole.
The problem is that when I go to cut a panel like plywood, the saw tracks off to the right and then just binds up. It’s not really strong enough to cut 3/4″ when its in good form, but I know it was working better when I first got it.
So does it need a new blade-yes-I’ll answer that myself. Do they have an adjustment or anything that may have got out of whack? Would a new blade fix it?
Any help is appreciated as I feel awful and would like to make it right for him asap.

New blade will certainly help... don't know whether anything will "fix" it lol
Sounded like a job for the cork screw and the blow torch. That cordless 18V Ryobi tool really was not designed for the task you put it up to. I have the drill, CC, Recip and flashlight, but would not even dream of attempting that...so in this context..it is a piece of cr*p.
I would be buying him/her a new one........Quinhead
If it's any consolation (to whom I'm not sure), I went out and got a Milwake Super Sawsall w/ the orbital action. So next time...To bad the Sawzall was not on hand when I needed it this time.
Now you can use that sawzall for finish carp work.. ha ha
yeah, like coping crown moulding LOL
I can't believe that you ruthlessly beat the crap out of your friend's saw...You know it's busted...And you went out and bought a brand new saw FOR YOURSELF !!Give him the sawzall. He deserves it, having to put up with you. And if he already has a sawzall, buy a brand new cordless saw for him. Yeesh.

I borrowed a tool once. It got stolen. I bought a new one. Better. Yes, for the guy I borrowed the old one from, stewpid.
He would never loan me another tool!?!?!?
I guess he didn't know the code.

First, I think you using the wrong tool for the job. I don't own a cordless saw, ( but used one once) I have always considered them more for trim work, maybe the occasional cutting of lumber - but never for demo work. You should be using a beat up corded saw with cheap blades and a sawzall.
now....if you think it maybe something as easily fixed as putting in a new blade, then try it. ( also return saw with a new unused blade) At the very least you owe him a new blade for using the tool in the manner that you did. And if you can't return the tool in as good a shape or better then when you borrowed it then do whatever it takes to make it right....even if that means buying a new one.
"At the very least you owe him a new blade for using the tool in the manner that you did. And if you can't return the tool in as good a shape or better then when you borrowed it then do whatever it takes to make it right....even if that means buying a new one"You can be sure of that, I know the code. This is my good pal and although I broke his saw, we'll still be friends : ) I will get a new one if I have to. He diddn't like it anyway. I just needed to know if there was some adjustment that may be out of whack, or if no such thing exists.
not everyone knows the code as you.
since you'd want to at least get him a new blade you will be able to find out if that makes the difference.
maybe some other remedies too , I don't know, but at least try that....
good luck.
So you "may" have hit some nails/wire lath/ceramic tile/gawd knows what else, and you are wondering why the POS doesn't cut straight?
Err,
#1 Don't ask me to lend you tools
#2 I think a new blade will help
#3 You may want to hang onto your dayjob
When you may have beating the saw, and may have felt it buck like crazy, you just May have tweaked the base. Easy enough to check and fix. I assume you own a BFH.
Not questioning the fact that I broke it, I was just was wondering if fixable. It's still a piece though. Can I borrow your snowblower?
Sounds like some bearings may be toast.
....Can I borrow your snowblower?......no, but you can borrow the leafblower...
.ooops the neighbor already wrecked it with straight gas.....hahahahah
I can see if I took a nice set of woodworking chisels and used them to repoint masonry or something, that would be a crime. But kicking teh s***out of a 50 dollar Ryobi Saw cause I had to do a job and it was all I had on hand at the time, well I say ride it till the wheels fall off.
intersting, I have the same saw , never abused it , used it only for light trimming of plywood and it started doing the same thing. pulling to the right . I was thinking blade but I havent had the time or need to mess with it .if you do fix it post back
Whoa!
You hear that everyone? I think I'm off the hook after all.
I'm going to do a little reaserch now on that one Skip. Well get to the bottom of this.
Well, if it's a 50 dollar saw, go buy him a new one for the pennance of not having the right tool for the job. No tool police here, just someone making a living for a long time off the tools of the trade. You certainly give good reason for never loaning anything out. You should be embarrassed for asking him to borrow it when you knew you'd be abusing it. I apologise if I somehow have misread this.A great place for Information, Comraderie, and a sucker punch.

Calvin, I'm not embarrassed in the least. And I'm not some f-in kid who needs a spanking for stealing daddy's tools. Its a stupid azz saw. I told my friend and when he saw it we died laughing. He knew the thing was crap. Embarrassed? No-Lifes too short. And as I said, I'll buy him a new one.Can I borrow your weed whacker?

bull #### x, you sound like the goofball I loaned my original sawzall to when he broke it. Unlike you, he wanted to only pay half the repair bill because it was old. Half my ####.
I'm ecstatic your buddy is happy.

Besides, I left my brand new cordless Dewalt over his house like a month ago and I found out he was using it to mix thinset. know how I found out? There was thinset stuck all over it. I diddn't say anything cause I don't even think he knew better, hence him owning a Ryobi. Now if he wasn't like my brother, I would have thrown the drill at him. Happy New Year Everyone!
Yeah but see thats not me. I'll buy him a new saw in a heart beat. No harm no foul. I think your getting mad at me as if I broke YOUR saw. Had that been the case, I would be embarassed. But no matter what I would pay full price, cause it worked before and now...aint. Sorry to hear you got screwed. Honestly, cause I'd be pizzed too.
x, no screw'd here. I billed his buddy the homowner. Of course the homo asked why? Ask your buddy, buddy.
Like I said, if I misconstrued anything, my apologies.

I've got a friend (pro) who somewhat forcefully loans me BROKEN tools and equipment. it is kind of fun to see which ones i can fix or have fixed. the prize so far is the Mercury 9.9 throttle linkage. the circular saw without the endplate/washer was tougher than i ever thought! the stripped extension set screw on the Milwakee angle drill was not easy (two set screws now). All of the corded tools had spliced cords. Heck if he's going to get any of the fixed tools back...i mean what's the code on that?
he's never asked for them back has he?

he's threatening to ask for them! nibbling around testing the waters is what it seems like. i would have no problem giving them back and getting my own. rent for minor to modest repairs is okay with me...especially with a friend.
>>Don't ask to borrow my tools and I won't ask to borrow your wife.Words to live by!
Happy New Year Calvin.
I see your point, but ALOT of fellas here make their living with their tools and you managed to hit a nerve.....good job!...electrical wiring...and now this......;>)
I know, I was afraid of that. Truth be told I feel the same way about my own tools, and I totally understand. I was afraid people were going to get mad cause I admittadly used the wrong tool for the job and broke it. Seriously, this thread has been somewhat me repenting my sin to the B-timers.I just thought it would be somewhat forgivable cause most people would consider that saw a toy.HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAPY NEW YEAR!
.....your Penance......go buy something German and Expensive and never use it.........Happy New Year to you as well
Offer him either a new Ryobi or the total of Ryobi cost in cash so he can put it toward a better brand. Definitely follow through regardless of his answer, and be happy you didn't ruin someone's expensive cordless.
Thanks for the thread. I was considering the Ryobi kit of cordless tools since I wouldn't use them commercially. Back to the mantra of "buy the best".
FWIW, I lost the bearings in the original little Makita cordless saw and found the two replacement parts cost about twice the price of the saw.
well im going into my third year with my ryobi kit and am generally pleased . lots of bang for the buck . my last ryobi drill outlasted my makita , dewalt , and milwaukee combined . I dont see the issue here is as much ryobi bieng "crap" as a tool being abused . abuse any tool aenough and it will start malfunctioning it dosent make it "crap" had a customer recently ask to borrow a phillps head screwdriver , I give him one of the kliens , I walk out in the other room and he is using it to punch holes in the drywall to put screw anchors in .(just added 10.00 to his invoice and bought a new one )
skip555,
I reread your first post stating that your saw also pulled to the right and now see that it might be just the blade. Hope someone tries a new blade and lets us know if that's the problem.
I just passed my Sears/Ryobi drill off to my son, after about 20 years of heavy use on homeowner and Habitat projects. The drill is still OK, but the charger went out, and could only find, as a replacement, a slow "wall-wart" charger.Unfortunately, they don't make them that good any more -- the more recent Sears "equivalent units" weigh about half as much and even look wimpy in comparison. Sears power tools have gone to heck in a Homer bucket over the past 30 years or so.
If ignorance is bliss why aren't more people
happy?
who let you in the back door again ;)
They'll let anyone in here Cag.
Except for the Tavern. I have to kiss cheek for that, and don't hold your breath.
you'd be lucky if it were only the cheek
*sigh*
Gotta run, I hope the huge Ryobi Saw Masacre gets solved.
So - your new years resolution was to get back on track at BT?
and it is such a *special* thing that you and CAG are all kissed and made up considering how you handed him his initiation rites!LOL

never met a cordless circ saw that didnt work better as a boat anchor.
GoodLuck
Handy Steve You da man. Thank god. People need to have a sense of humor around here. I've been getting nervous that the tool cops are gonna be knocking at my door this evening. LOL
First thing to try is a new blade. It sounds like the teeth have been rounded over on one side from a nail or some such,
happy?
one question....
Did you know what was behind that wall you were cuttin in to?
nuttin like cutting into some pipes to ruin your day
Put about 50 feet of rope on the saw... return it as is. No man deserves to have tools if he's buying ryobi... or work force....
Id knock black and decker.. but thems folks make dewalt, and I got too many yellow tools in my locker.
GoodLuck
and dont call me handy.... Ive been around here too long, asked too many questions.... ive come to the conclussion
Im more like Starting to figure it out Steve.
Gotta be the blade. And the Ryobi part.
>> I was demoing a wall and I may have hit some nails...and maybe some wire lath...and some ceramic tile that was under an underlayment.
Sounds like a sledge hammer would have been the right tool.
I agree with the other poster, a Ryobi is not a real tool, and I would never own a yellow tool either.
