After finding the special order upper cabinets too pricey, I built my own and set them on a wanut stained poplar countertop, left room for a future bar sink.

way nice.......... Tell me about the walnut stain on poplar. I've tried to do a cherry stain on it & turned out so so, wasn't happy with it. What did you use? How about the paint/finish on the cabs.
Good work.
bottom cabs are thomasville in toasted almond, top cabs are painted in a matching eggshell from porter paint. I glued and screwed a 3pcs poplar top on 1/4 inch birch, which gave me just enough thickness to add the finished edge. I rubbed on a latex walnut stain from minwax, with a couple coats of clear worked real well.
