Hi all,
I’m new to this site, looks like a very helpfull place to be. I’m building my home myself and I’m at the finishing stage. I have two areas I need some help on. First, I’m ready to finish the staircase. My wife wants oak treads, risers, and rail. Where do you start as far as knowing what goes on first? If anyone knows of a source for information please let me know. Second, I’m milling some oak planks to make some interior doors. We would like the ‘ Old World ‘ look. Getting the planks to 1 3/8″ is no problem, putting the doors together properly, is. I would hate to see these doors bend or warp. Is there a book or video or something out there that could tell me the best way to build these doors?
Thanks for any help.

My wife and I built our house and the best source of info was Fine Homebuilding Mag. It just seemed that they had an article to help us with the next phase as we were approaching it. As far as door building is concerned, check the mag. I know that they just ran a story on the subject. Have fun, work safe. You are living the dream of at least half of the male population of this great country.
Thanks Oldlou,
Would you happen to know if FHB can research for the issue that has door building and stairs. Building a home yourself is a real experience. Thanks for you help.
Roger
If you go to the main FHB web site (click on the banner at the top of this page) so the right side you will see Index. From there you can search back issues by keywood or alphabeticaly.
Also on the left side is the bookstore. Tauton has several reprint "best of books" out. I think that one is on windows and doors.

Are you talking about board and batten doors?
Thanks for the information. I have an idea of what I would like for the doors to look like, however, I just want to make sure that I put the doors together with the best possible method. I want the doors to out last me and stay true. At this point I'm taking rough cut oak and planing the planks down to 1 3/8". We would like for the doors to look like some old English doors. Any ideas on how to?
Again Thanks for your help.
Roger
The problem is that I don't have any idea what "old english" doors are. By old do you mean 1950's, 1500's, 1000's, etc.
My guess is that you are talking about board and batten style, but I have no idea.
I could not find any good links showing them, but here are a couple of starting places.

That is for a small cabinet door and the battens are the horiontal boards on the back. For a bigger door you need need a 3rd board that runs diagonaly across the back to keep it from saging. Most basic garden gates are board and batten design.
Here is a picture of larger door.

But it only shows the front.
