I am considering building the replacement windows for our 1920’s house. I’ve made good progress on tracking down sash balances, and some limited information on construction of the window itself.
However, I was hoping someone here may have been down this road before and could pass on some pointers of which direction to head. Books maybe or even personal experience would be helpful.
I’ve built fixed windows before, and have rebuilt a couple of old wood windows taking the measurements from the original.
I’m looking to try to create my own energy efficient wood windows. I plan on ordering double glazed, low-e glass to install into the widows I build, but I’m searching for new ways to construct the widow where the sash and case have minimal air leakage.
I’m hoping for something more sophisticated than an old window style with balances instead of weights and more weather striping. And my experiences in the past w/ sash replacement kits left much to be desired.
Any information would be helpful
Thanks,
Ott

You know about Resource Conservation Technology Inc in Maryland? Great resource for weatherstripping of all types (as well as many other water resistant building materials). They are extremely customer responsive - exactly the type company you are glad you deal with.
For hardware try Blaine Window and Hardware Inc, also in Maryland.
For the woodworking try to find "Ed Knox' Window Book". Terrific info written (and maybe self published) by a guy who spent his working career building and repairing wood windows in the S.F. Bay area. I got my copy several years ago from Builder's Booksource in...I think they are in Berkley...back before they even had a website. I have some other books on window building but Ed Knox is who I reach for whenever I have a question. Well worth the search.
Thanks JimI found their website and I'm ordering the book. I also appreciate the hardware website as well. I still have a ways to go before I know exactly what hardware to order but knowing where to order is half the battle.Ott
