I have a client with a family room that is one step down from the adjacent kitch area. The kitchen will be relocated to another part of the home. The paln is to open the wall between the kitchen & family room. I suggested bringing the family room floor up to the level of the old kitchen & this is ok with them. My question deals with insulating under the new floor as it is a slab on grade, currently covered with carpet. I would think some insulation would be appropriate but I’m not sure about the vapor barrier placement in this case. Any suggestions??

Are you planning to frame in the area below or pour concrete on top of the existing slab.....if you frame the floor in then the question of insulation can be answered by using http://www.Google.com/ and ask for subfloor insulation....several manufacturers will give product advise,.....on the other hand if you are pouring concrete on the existing slab, then all of the vapor barriers and insulation should have been in place...good luck... Just 3/4" t&g plywood subfloor on joists to bring it up to the level of the rest of the house(about 7-1/2" inches).
