Does anyone know a way to add an 18-inch, floor to header, bump out bay to a house with slab-on-grade construction? I would like to bump the window of my dining room out about 18-inches to give a little more room for manuvering around the table. Can this be done without adding a traditional foundation? Plan B would be to add a standard bay window, but I dont get the floor space.
Thanks in advance

Skyhooks?
Seriously, I think you'll need a foundation. Get out your shovel, dig down to slab bottom (it is probably edge-thickened), drill into the edge for some epoxy-set rebar dowels, then form, and pour.
C,
You missed the part where he said; "slab on grade".

Thanks firebird, I'm often dumb, but seldom dumb as a stump. I stand corrected and am deleting my answer which was for joists.

Your floor IS a slab and you want to add floor space without adding to the slab foundation????
Unless you have a BIG skyhook and can walk on water, you need to add to the foundation slab.

Ah damn, I was hoping some one would have a good idea for this problem. Not that that skyhook idea isn't good, just cant afford one.
I also want to add a bay in our kitchen and that means I have to add to the slab.
Oh well, guess I will have to do it the old fashioned way, the proper way!

I have some used skyhooks I'll sell ya for a measley $100.00 a piece. They are the invisible kind (the best), but I can't remember where I put them. Never mind.
I invented skyhooks.
Doug, I talked this over with Gabe and he told me to tell you to just lay the plywood subfloor down on the dirt. Then put the walls up.
Thats how I would do it...Gabe told me so in a secret email.
If you want, I'll post the email for you.

ps Gabe wants me to get credit for this brilliant idea.
pps Put bridging down first...just lay it on the flat, then nail the plywood to it....the bridging will stiffen the floor. If you want to read a fancy personal signature... go read someone else's post.
I see this is a continuation of the bridging thread!
Just read that a few minutes ago or otherwise I would be in the dark here. Man its tough keeping up around here.
