I have a cabin up north in Michigan and we are in the process of adding on. It was built in the 1920’s on a slab. The walls are split cedar logs as studs, with 2×4’s as sill, and top plates.
We are plannning to put a new roof over the whole cabin, we poured new slabs to square off the cabin. We would like to have half of the cabin with a cathedral ceiling and the other half with a loft.
My question is how do you tie the two types of roofs together and also will we have to add 2×4 studs to the walls and make the top plates beefier.
We are planning to do the work ourselves, but if we need to hire someone for structural advice, we are willing.
Great site, lots of info.

Have someone engineer you a ridge beam this eliminates the need for ceiling joists and collar ties. But it is very important to have this beam sized for your situation.
