Question on additional cabinet support.
We just placed a granite counter top on top of two cabinets that were ganged together to form an island, overall dimension of 24″ by 54″. We built up the tops by running 3/4″ x 6″ around the perimeter and another 3/4″ x 4″ over the seam between the two cabinets. The granite is 32†x 66â€, the piece will be positioned so that there is an overhang on two sides of roughly 8†and 6â€.
My question relates to the overall sturdiness of the cabinets since the piece weighed roughly 350 lbs… Before we finish up and apply silicon around the edges is there any need to add additional support? Or is the overall perimeter large enough to handle the weight? I’m worried about potentially crushing the island.
Thanks -Mike

The granite isn't going to crush the cabintets. Silicone it down and forget about it.
We usually do a rough deck of 5/8" ply per order of our granite sub. He sets the slab on with a dab of silicon no problem. Some cabs such as a sink base do have a flimsy front that may span 36" but the 5/8" ply is usually enough to support the slab. Though I would be hesitant to do a dance up there.
No dancing here, my wife can attest to that. ;-)Actually I'm not worried about the facade since we sprung for one that is solid Oak. I guess with me still feeling the pain in my back lifting that monstrosity of a top it got me thinking that we had too much weight for the cabinets. But it sounds like we are going to be ok.
