Our cabinets are typical melamine coated builders blah (in white).
The floor to ceiling pantry is an annoyance, so I have decided to remove the doors and put in drawers.
My question is…. may I just use particle board screws (1/2″ into 5/8 P/B) to fasten the drawer slides to the inside of the existing cabinet ?? or would I be better off to fit a more substantial “sub frame” inside the cabinetry to which I would fashion the drawer slides???
Any wisdom much appreciated.

I've assembled quite a few Ikea-type pieces of furniture that use particle board screws and I've been pleasantly surprised by their holding power.
However, the pilot holes have always been pre-drilled very clean and to exactly the right size for the particular screw. I think it would be very hard to make the right pilot hole with a drill. I suspect the ready-to-assemble units may have those holes bored with a router.
In any case, I would experiment with some scrap particle board since so much is dependant on wood, screws, pilot hole and technique.
I would attach some plywood or hardwood inside the cabs to support the slides for peace of mind.
Hunt up some ''euro'' hinge screws and the plastic inserts. Most drawer hardware holes are sized for them, flatheads fit flush and the inserts hold the screw well and stay in the pb good.
