solid blocking above ...
and packing in the top of the cab ...
then screw up thru.
is one.
I've seen but never done a long "all thread" rod.
have also run lags up thru when the designer thought they needed extra hold ...
build up the top ... then recessed the lag heads ... then skinned the underside of the top ... the part ya see.
this is a good time to not buy the cheapest cabinets ...

I have taken them down on remodels and most (all) were screwed up through the top rail into solid blocking/joists. When knowing or figuring a large payload, I've all thread'd with sleeves.........now you need to alter the shelves. I would try to tie in the sides of the box to your fill in the top. Try to get the whole carcass working together. There's some tonnage in those cabinets.

this might be the most important part of Jeffs message!
as I typed that ...
I remembered those "Diamond Brand" that as I drove a screw from ff to ff on the sink base ... the stile seperated from the rail!
and ... not that it was that tight a fit ... but it really didn't have room to go anywhere ...
plus ... the other side wasn't attached yet!
I'd have hated to install those POS's hanging under their own weight ...
let alone a coupla hundred pounds of dishes.
thinking now if I had to ... I'd be running some 1x1 suports ir something similar from the top to the bottom ... screwed tight at into each end of said 1x ...
and nailed or stapled along the way with some glue.

Having done it the way Jeff mentioned--solid blocking in the ceiling and lags up through a structural top into same--and gotten away with it no problems...still on reflection I think next time I would build in room in the stiles of the face frame for threaded rod all the way down so the thing is sitting on some big nuts and washers rather than hanging from #8 screws in shear through the cab sides into the top; remember this is mdf, not exactly known for it's screw-holding properties....
