I’m about to order CF siding and have added all the areas of the house and subtracted all the window/door openings. Is this the best method plus a “fudge” factor or is there a preferred method used by the pros to figure siding needs. The siding is to be clapboards, 5-1/4: reveal.

I'd just do the calculations and leave the windows in- that'll create your waste factor material. If there's huge expanses of glass, you can deduct for those, but otherwise, just leave the window/door SF in the total.

I concur w/Bob. That's always worked for me unless there's some freaky areas in which case figure them separtly.

Third vote for figuring in the windows. I was once told there was a 10-20% waste count. I dont know if that works out to the amount of windows or not, but it usually works.
wow, this may be a first, first 4 posts and all agree.
When I figure siding I leave all openings, except the garage door openings.
On the occasions there is enough left over it gets sent back to the yard.
Half the time the yard just dumps a full bunk or two depending on size ordered and picks up the rest after the job, they figure they may have to pick it up anyway and it's easy to do it with the mule, drop a pallet, come back with the truck and pick a pallet up.
OK so 4 says in one post it's typical for everyone to disagree and nowwwwwwww ....back to politics : )~
