How does one turn a house into a Not-So-Big house if it's not already that way? My house was custom designed by Larry Garnett and was based on Susan Susanka's Not-So-Big concept. I'm familiar with the idea but not sure how that would fit a remodel of a house that wasn't the inspiration of the NSB concept to begin with. The NSB idea was based somewhat on the Craftsman style houses. Very functional spaces with a high finish.
treefreak,
Not So Big concepts can be applied to houses of all shapes and sizes, both new and old. For example, if you look at Sarah's latest book, Home By Design, you'll see that Sarah uses a couple of remodels to illustrate the principles and applications of her "architect's toolbox". On page 154 is a Washington State home that used to be a simple ranch. The architect's re-design relocated the kitchen and changed the windows in such a way to transform an ordinary house into something much more. Similarly, the book features a condo remodel on page 163 that was done inexpensively, but used color to completely alter the feel of the place.
Sarah has received many requests from people over the years who can not afford to build from scratch, or who do not wish to leave their current homes, but would love to be able to live in a space that gives them a feeling of home, like what Sarah talks about. For this reason, a book focusing on remodeling Not So Big style seemed like the next step.
I hope this answers your questions. Thanks for asking.
