Can SIP’s be used for clear span ceiling
I’ve never worked with SIP’s. I see them in use as walls and roofs but never as ceilings.
Can they be used as clear span ceilings (up to 22′)? Thickness isn’t an issue for me; I generally platform frame roof on a plate on top of joist anyway.
What do you do set a rim joist for carrying rafters?
Is there an issue of tieing walls together to control rafter thrust?
If so how much bearing is required at plates?
Are they available with drywall lower face?
Are the built in condut raceways sufficent?

jimcco,
No.
10 feet is what I got for my ceilings (12 inch thick SIP's ) .. add a wood beam and the allowance goes up dramatically. Since I have a local sawmill that sells wood really cheaply that's what I did to get clear spans...
oops! I posted this before I finished my answers to your questions, now, as for wire chases.. they were fine where I used them.. most of the time I didn't since I kinda designed on the fly with my place.. what I did was buy a whole bunch of drill bit extensions and it was no problem for me to get more then 10 feet.. (I'll have a whole bunch to sell when I'm finished thorugh!) drilling thru foam is so easy that it's embaressing...
Hmm I seem to remember a question regarding rims?
It depends on what you intend to build and your budget..
There are simple and cheap solutions and expensive and time consuming solutions.. it really depends on if you look long term or short term. Long term means dealing with weather issues. short term does not..
let me know your thoughts..

From the tables it appears that 24' spans are possible. (I think longer spans are possible using LVLs rather than 2x lumber in the sips.)
