Can wood or fiber-cement clapboard be installed over stucco?
I am a designer with a client whose stucco farmhouse needs some interest and visual balance. I would like to recommend installing clapboard in a gable area and on a large dormer to better integrate the clapboard addition on the back. Is this possible and recommended? The house is in the Hudson Valley, NY. Existing stucco is in good condition. Thanks for your sage advice!

Yes, it *can* but the devil is in the details.
Primary difficulties are flashings and attachment. True stucco is hard so you would probably need to attach verticle strapping to hang the new siding on. That will have and advantage in that it can create a rainscreen detail in that wall. The strapping would likely need to be attached with Tapccon screws or GRKs Caliburn screws, possibly in conjunction with PL Premium adhesive

Yep, my thinking too. Can be done, but flashing and other edge finishing is critical, both to appearance and weather integrity.
Dormer implies windows, so the thickness of this build out could mean some special trim work and flashing at windows. Also investigation whether there is enough roof overhang to cover this thickness of material
Thank you for the info
Roof overhang is not a problem, and the concept only affects one small set of windows, so I think it will be do-able. I appreciate your knowledge!
