This may be an off-the wall question, but I am sprucing up a bathroom and replacing the vanity. The old vanity has a solid-surface countertop (not Corian, but some sort of fake marble). We want a tile top on the new vanity. My question is, has anyone tried tiling on top of solid surface. My original plan was to throw away the old top and build a new one with plywood and backerboard, but am I wasting my time? If I scuff up the surface of the old one, could I possibly just tile over that?
Thanks for your help.

That 'cultured marble" is tough stuff. I have found that you need to use a diamond blade to cut it cleanly.
I think the answetr to your questions is yes. And mapei makes a thinset designed for goping over old tile. search their website for the brand name.

Thanks.
I was wondering about cutting the cultured marble. I need to square up an radiused inside corner (the top has a wing sticking out of one side), and figured I would need to use a masonry blade to cut it.
I'll check on the Mapei thinset.
